I am a Mad Scientist and Loonie who is obsessed with the number 127.
127 is a “signpost” for the bizarre and the prevalence of “coincidence” in our lives.
Here is a small list of 127 occurances in my life:
1) It all began at age 16 with my first job at a newly opening K-mart in Wichita KS. As a “stock boy” I was assigned employee number 127 so that they could call me over the PA to get carts, bag at the registers, clean up spills, etc without having to burden the general public with my actual name. I quickly noticed that all the cheap crap I was pricing with the price gun at the checkout isles was $1.27, most likely because someone studied what prices are perceived to be “bargains.” There was a lot of crap that same price and I did not have to change my price gun very often. Point is that that number got wired into my head like a nickname and I began to notice it in weird places.
2) My stepdad's B-day was 1-27.
3) Pearl harbor was 12-7
4) My car broke down in the middle of nowhere Kansas at 2 am and there was this sign in the wheat field a few feet away that just a big 127 (nothing else written on the sign. no other signs for miles).
5) I was once stuck behind a Semi who in turn was stuck behind a slow moving black sedan (again in the middle of nowhere Kansas two lane highway) and eventually tried to pass both vehicles when an oncoming car nearly forced me off the road and in-between the semi and sedan. After having this brush with death, I notice that the sedan had a license plate labeled with only the number 127. No state marking, letters, or other numbers. Totally a men-in-black car with heavily tinted windows.
6) On a trip to Providence to visit my cousin at RISD in the late 80s, I was going thru the usual 127 rant with him and his roommates while walking by an old movie theater. They are “humoring” me for the most part until I notice and point out the movie poster for the feature attraction “Repoman”. The lead character (Emilio Estevez) is standing behind a old car and what you can see of the license plate behind his leg are the numbers 127. Upon viewing Repoman (which contains other 127 occurrences in addition to the car license plate) it becomes clear that the whole movie is about coincidences. There is a classic rant in the movie about the cosmic unconsciousness and the “lattice of coincidence” that finally gave some meaning to my obsession with the number.
Here is a quote from Repoman:
“A lot o' people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch o' unconnected incidents 'n things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice o' coincidence that lays on top o' everything. Give you an example; show you what I mean: suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.”
If you see the movie look out for “plates of shrimp” or better yet 127 in subtle places.
7) I read a SF Chronicle “pink section” article in the late 80s about Jim Morrison of the Doors and how they had found a box of unpublished poetry of his that had been labeled on the top of the box “127 Fascination.” So Morrison was obessed with this number as well???
8) Everyone’s built in domain of their PC is mapped to 127.0.0.1
