I make a funny

At work yesterday I was joking with coworkers that since Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Darwin, and Abe Lincoln are having their 200th birthdays within a few weeks of each other (more aquarians) that there must be a joke there. So they challenged me to write one. Here it is:

Darwin, Poe, and Lincoln walk into a bar.

The bartender says "Happy 200th birthday fellas. Drinks are on the
house"

Bartender pours them drinks and says "Cheers Mr. Lincoln to the end of slavery and the election of our first black president."

Lincoln replies "Our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all
men are created equal."

Bartender pours another drinks and says "Cheers Mr. Darwin to the end of Intelligent Design in our schools."

Darwin replies "Survival of the fittest."

Bartender pours one last drink and says "Cheers Mr. Poe to the death of Elitist New England Presidents pretending to be average-Joe Texans."

Poe replies "Nevermore!!!"

I want to hear the yeast genetics joke.

Hi [info]127fascination, I hope you don't mind that I friended you. I felt I had to after my Philosophy teacher was making a point in class last week and his point relied heavily on the consistency of the number 127.

Now I am curious what he said about 127.

It was good to see you at the Stone City party. Lets stay in touch with the whole lay off crap happening in our industry.

Yes, I'd like to stay in touch. *sigh* We shared that sentiment a lot last time I had lunch with the Applied Biosystems crew and they were all looking at their last few months (July 31 is the tentative official end date).

I warn you, the philosophy thing probably isn't worth the time it takes to read it, but I'm procrastinating so here goes...
Some portion of the philosopher Lakatos' model of science included degrees of quality of novel predictions. As an example, the teacher noted how easy it is to predict that the sun will rise tomorrow. More impressive though would be to predict that every time he put his finger on the chalk railing (yeah, Cal State Hayward still uses chalk), he found 127 particles of chalk on his finger. He touched the railing three times and each time lifted and looked at his fingers before pronouncing "127."

See, it's really a silly small thing, but I'd read your bio before and it made my ears perk up. :) Oh and btw, aside from the science thing, you seem like a cool and interesting guy. (I don't want you to think I'm objectifying your grey matter.)

That is the cool thing about 127, people use it but don't know why. Its a number that rolls off the tongue or something.

Hey I know a bunch of ABI folks go to Beer Friday at Devils Canyon. A bunch of maxy folks are going this Friday. Interested?

Ohhh, a distinct possibility. Belmont, right? One of my favorite ABI people lives there. I'll iron out my life details and get back to you on this one. Thanks.
